What Is the Best Hawaiian Island to Visit?

Image
Hundreds of thousands of tourists come to Hawaii each year, and I’ve always wondered how they make their decisions of which island to visit.  Each island has its own unique experience, so I definitely think visitors should think a bit longer about which Hawaiian Island they want to visit.  So here are a few little descriptions to help you answer the daunting question: what is the best Hawaiian Island to visit?

In praise of the World’s First Zero-Waste Trip

Image
To help combat climate change, lifestyle alterations can be key – from biking more and switching out incandescent light bulbs to checking the sustainable practices of travel providers before heading out on vacation. This summer, eco-conscious travelers can join Natural Habitat Adventures on the world’s first-ever waste-free trip, a seven-day safari in Yellowstone Country. Cozy, rustic cabins in a secluded, bush-style camp provide comfortable bases for daily game drives as guests set out in search of bison, bighorn sheep, wolves, and other wildlife in “America’s Serengeti.” The goal (besides capturing stunning Instagram photos) is to recycle, compost, upcycle, reuse, or refuse – think eschewing straws and single-use plastics – all waste produced as part of Nat-Hab trip operations. Added bonus: The company – which is also the world’s first carbon-neutral travel provider – partners with and donates a portion of trip proceeds to the World Wildlife Fund.  Departure: July 6, 2019. Big Sur is Now Open

The most scenic road trip in the U.S. is back on: As of July, drivers can once again take in the hair-raising cliffs, calming redwoods, raucous elephant seal rookeries, and pocket beaches lining the Pacific Coast Highway from Monterey to Morro Bay. For 14 months, the drive was off-limits after a landslide buried a quarter-mile stretch of highway south of Big Sur – which for most of last year found itself a coastal “island” due to another landslide that took out a bridge to the town’s north. The reopening couldn’t have come at a better time: September brings a noticeable drop in RVs clogging lookouts; perfect hiking temperatures; and orcas, humpbacks, and blue whales swimming offshore. In October, Andrew Molera State Park’s eucalyptus trees fill with monarch butterflies on their annual migration south. The only drawback? With one of California’s favorite playgrounds back in business, rooms at Ventana Big Sur and Post Ranch Inn and that table at Nepenthe are hot tickets once again. ...

The Joys of Arriving After Dark

BY DAVID HOCHMAN The first time I ever went to Palm Springs, the  woman I was dating drove us there from Los Angeles late one moonless Friday in her red Miata.  Even with the convertible top down, when we pulled into town we couldn’t discern much in the darkness beyond a few tall cacti and some floodlit palms. The thrill hit us the next morning. How had we not noticed the 10,000-foot snowcapped peak towering above our hotel, or the perfect patchwork of pools and fairways stretching to the opposite horizon? The rising sun turned the mountains lavender and gold. I’d never seen skies so blue. Arriving somewhere new at night can trip you up like that: On a taxi ride into Manhattan from the airport at 9 or 10 pm, you miss the traffic and emerge from tunnel or bridge to find the city in hair-down mode – Wall Street types are out walking their poodles; you might even win a smile from a cop. Getting in late is a kind of beckoning. You’re there, but not yet fully aware of the tr...

Carlsbad Caverns – the Magical Caves in New Mexico

Image
Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico, USA. The caves are found in the Guadalupe Mountains. Tourists primarily visit Carlsbad Cavern – a show cave, which is prepared for the visitors. This particular cave has a huge limestone chamber, which is 4,000 ft (1,220 m) long, 625 ft (191 m) wide and 255 ft (78 m) high. It is the seventh largest chamber in the world and is simply called Big Room. Limestone and stalactites are found all over the caves. In the spotlight they reflect various colors and transfer visitors to the different, magic world for a while. Tourists can hike or use the elevator to see the cave.
