Sometimes when I travel outside of the United States, I take a look around at the faces of other people. I don’t often see any else who looks like me, a Black American woman. On the occasions when I do see another Black person, they’re frequently not an American but someone from an African country, usually residing in that location for work or school. Closer to home, like in the US, Mexico, or the Caribbean, I may be more likely to see other Black American travelers at resorts or tourist attractions, but rarely do I come across another Black woman traveling solo like me. Many women have expressed concerns about traveling there, and many more have opted not to go at all. I’ve never been to India — and I’m also not a woman — but I feel this is an important subject to discuss. Today, please welcome Candace Rardon, who spent many months traveling around India by herself, to discuss safety and solo travel in India. My introduction to India came behind the wheel of an auto-rickshaw. For two weeks in 2011, my friend Citlalli and I took part in the Rickshaw Run, driving one of India’s ubiquitous three-wheeled vehicles 2,000 miles across the country. On our fifth morning, we spent three hours wrestling our way through an 18-mile traffic jam in Bihar, a state known for its poverty and violence. One particular of the matters I am the most mindful when I travel is my presence as a woman and what that means. In distinct, I remember the continuous phrases from the males in Buenos Aires. It was weird since by the end of my sojourn in Argentina’s capital, I barely observed. “At least we are not in Mexico,” my good friend from Durango, Mexico informed me. “There, they will grab you and not even apologize.” My complete existence, I felt like I really should be appreciated past the superficial and that I could do anything at all on my very own. But, as I got older and realized I wasn’t a superhero, I understood that I couldn’t do every thing on my very own (that is why we have family members, close friends, and yes, partners).
